The objective of Foundation Fauna which was established in 1990 is to help animal keepers and to spread the culture of protecting animals.
Only a very few people know that we may thank the establishment and the prior political admission of the law (1998 XXVIII.) on the protection and safeguarding of animals to deceased Ágnes Széchy. Ágnes Széchy has also established the first national civil organization undertaking the task of the supervision and protection of animals based on English model. Csaba Takács fulfilled the responsibility for the operation of the above organization for 10 years. Csaba would ride the roads of the city of Budapest with a car equipped with URW radio. Only he could tell about all the saved animals aside from household pets all the way to pigeons and bats. (We are planning the documentation of the past starting from way back!)
Foundation Fauna awarded prizes to the best journalists being the front-fighters of natural protection on an annual basis. This is how Gyöngyi Mangel received an award. She is currently one of the most active environmental and natural preservation reporter for Radio Kossuth (MR1).
We have helped the publication of the book (http://www.libri.hu/szerzok/olty_marta.html) with the title „Misery of animals” written by Dr. Márta Olfy who fights for ceasing experimentation on animals.
We have also supported the Scientific Student Essays of the Veterinary Faculty at the University of St. István – written with the objective of protecting animals. Some of theses essays aimed to work out methods substituting experimentations on animals. (http://www2.szie.hu/ujsag/v_13/08.html)
Our volunteer Christina Alexa had been working at the buffalo reservation at Kápolnapuszta. At the same time she had been conducting research for genetic engineering with the result of suggesting the genitive isolation for decreasing the rate of inbreeding.
Our Volunteer Lívia Batta had been conducting the assessment of the conditions of national animal shelters at the Faculty of Animal Breeding at the University of St. István, under the professional leadership of Katalin Dr. Maros.
We provided an URGENT AID of half a million Hungarian Forints (200+300 thousand HUF) for the premise of Foundation of Animal Home located at Vas county (http://www.allatotthon-vasad.hu/). The foundation suffered a fire burning. We have also provided legal assistance for the above mentioned animal shelter at Gyula over several years. The organization had been involved in a legal dispute but finally it managed to remain and it is still operating due to the legal protection.
As a reaction to the news caught up by the media related to dog attacks on humans we have financed a film titled as „A FILM ON DOGS to a cat” (directed by Ágnes Mógor). The purpose of supporting the above film was to fulfill a pedagogic objective.
Dogs are considered mankind’s number one pets, the symbols of loyalty and commitment. Animals who are able to socialize with people can become their best friends. According to all dog keepers people who own a dog are never lonely. The film tells us about the pets of some famous and less famous dog fans- such as Péter Popper, El Kazovszkij and Vilmos Csányi and as well as about their relationships with them. You can find confessions concerning the relationship between dogs and humans and also Professor Vilmos Csányi’s ethological analysis and explanation on why we need pets. (www.port.hu, zug.hu)
Over the years we have offered help in various cases. Not only have we looked for new owners and offered animal protection (like vaccinations, spaying, etc.) for the indigent but we have also helped in wildlife conservation problems and have settled lost farm animals (donkeys, goats) in bio farms. We have provided help in problems concerning deer, ducks, goldfish, polecats, pigeons, dormice, emus and horses in Budapest and its area. We have organized animal care programs and have presented them in summer camps (like Pony Horse Club, The Country House in Ipolyszalka. We have also sent volunteers to animal shelters (Bottyan Equus Hungária Public Utility Foundation http://www.bottyanequus.com/) and bio farms (eg. in Újlengyel).
We have given pet food to a number of animal shelters (eg. http://kisallatmenhely.uw.hu, Cat rescuers in Eger, Pet Clinique in Szentendre and its neighbourhood) and also to people who were willing to temporarily take in pets (in Hernád, Zsámbok, Budapest).
Reacting to citizens’ announcements we organize animal welfare surveys and if our advice does not have a result, then we initiate the legal procedure. Our jurist-activist, Viki Pálinkás started the free Legal Aid for Animal Protection.
One of our most important missions regarding animal protection with scientific demands is launching an OKJ vocational training on animal protection, OKJ being the National Qualifications Register.
Lately we have put our energy not only into saving animals in Budapest, the Central region and other parts of the country (like Nemesbikk, Devecser etc.) but we are also organizing a civil animal protection chain in the Carpathian basin.
